How generic tools work

Generic extractors run heuristics — usually variants of Camelot, Tabula, or the same algorithms — that look for grid lines, whitespace, or repeating patterns. They make no assumption about what the columns mean.

This works well for structured PDFs where the table has clear borders and no unusual formatting: research reports, product catalogues, invoices with a fixed layout.

It works less well for bank statements, which have visual quirks: descriptions that wrap mid-cell, decorative header bands, summary rows sprinkled between transactions, running balances that visually collide with the amount column.

How a bank statement converter works

A specialised converter uses the same extraction primitives but layers on domain knowledge. It knows a transaction typically has a date in the leftmost column, a description that can wrap, and one or two monetary columns.

That lets it recover from ambiguity a generic tool can't. Example: if a description wraps onto two visual lines, a generic extractor may produce two rows; a specialised one knows to merge them because the second line has no date.

When to use which

  • Bank statement (checking, savings, credit card) → specialised converter. It will produce a cleaner output with less manual cleanup.
  • Investment or brokerage statement with transaction-like activity → try the specialised converter first; fall back to a generic extractor if the columns don't match.
  • Invoice, receipt, or bill → generic extractor. There's no transaction-row concept here.
  • Research report, price list, or catalogue → generic extractor. Layouts are typically regular and don't need domain knowledge.
  • Scanned image-only PDF → neither, until you OCR it first.

What accuracy really means

No PDF-to-Excel tool — generic or specialised — is 100% accurate on 100% of files. What varies is how much cleanup you need. On typical modern bank statement exports, this specialised tool usually gets it right in one pass and needs no fixes.
